Minutes of Committee Meeting held on Monday, 18/03/2024 7:00 pm at Men’s Bowling Club House

1. MATTERS ARISING
Minutes: GS – riased number of chalking up the number of hours volunteers spend in the park. Pets Corner – min in the park approx 12 hours per day 7 days a week.
2. NATIONAL HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND UPDATE
Minutes: Update was circulated via email.
Council provided info to NLHF then we’ll get more info on how the process works and deadlines. Trafford newsletter indicated March 2025 work starts (was originally Sept 2024), although staff would be appointed before then.
3. ONE TRAFFORD
Minutes: Update was circulated via email. JS, RW, RB & SH went on a walking meeting with Amey.
Potholes have been filled with patch of tarmac at the Firswood entrance. Entrance from Cromwell Road should be next. 57 trees planted in the park. Not much happening with the flooding with the park – have to wait until the water has gone before anything can be done.
Suggestion of 3 water butts linked to the shelters for water supply. John Stevens has a small capital fund for this year.
Lots of graffiti in Larry Sullivan area – Amey passing on details to graffiti team.
Garden beds – decided to have a central enlarged garden bed for this year. Other beds would be planted with wildflower seeds – Amey will do all that.
Fold down barrier to be installed at entrance next to the stadium.
Raised issue on the playgrounds – especially question of what ever happened to the wheelchair swing and also whether children are every consulted on the play areas. Possibly something to raise with the council.
Action: SH to raise within the council.
4. SPORTS TRAFFORD
Minutes: Tennis Courts: LTA Going to start work on it April/May for resurfacing. Should be finished by end of May 2024. Feedback on colours is that blue or green are good colours for the tennis court (black least favourable).
MT: LTA are trying to set up tennis for free across the country where they engage with the local community/community group to help run tennis for free sessions.
Athletics Stadium track is to be resurfaced end of May - funded by Sport England.
Non turf cricket pitch to be installed.
Action: JS to feedback colour suggestion to Tom Howarth
5. CAFÉ UPDATE
Minutes: Phill Howells in touch with RB & RW about the café – is committed to keeping the café going but wants to relocate the changing places toilet. ETH stated that the current room is likely the correct size so can’t be moved to a smaller space.
6. GARDEN OF REFLECTION REPORT (JS)
Minutes: Garden of Reflection – signed off by green spaces fund. Spent £370 on plants. Agreed topsoil would come from FOLP money but has given Shelly receipts for topsoil & plants. Still have £130 from FOLP to spend on plants. Bench have been delivered and will be brought onsite and installed in the next few weeks. JB has been doing work on getting a sign/plaque – been in touch with a local mosaic artist. Oval sign with Garden of Reflection & bees then a separate sign on the bench in reference to the Manchester bombing.
Action: JB to circulate design via email for people to comment on.
7. FOLP NEWSLETTER & LITTER UPDATE
Minutes: Litter Pick Dates: Easter 31st March Sunday 9.30am meet at the café.
Action: SD to advertised on Facebook.

9. FUTURE EVENTS - Cycling (MN)
Minutes: £15K coming from TfGM for covered cycle shetlers at the Firswood end and sheffield hoops near the cubs/scouts area and repair the shelter roof near the Athletics track. Just waiting for the paper work. Once signed TMBC can install a contractor to deliver. Waiting for advice about where exactly the shelters can go. Need to determine who owns the land where the shelters will go at the Firswood end.
MN has discussed previous cycling events with the Trafford cycling officier who was quite keen to do one again – pencilled in for 21st July 2024. TfGM have a road show, Beryl Bikes coming, Unicycles, Cargo bikes for load, Bike fixing. Also want to encourage people to walk.
Theatre (SD) Hobgoblin Theatre Company Saturday 6th July – Robin Hood 3pm. Aimed at 4+. SH to volunteer with the rest of her family.
Action: MN to email SH & ETH about design of shelters & locations to ensure coordination with the conservation area & HLFB.
10. Updates Finance (JS)
Minutes: Email circulated.
£9,455 for general use.
£130 to spend on plants, £700-£800 for bench installation. Would also like to get an indoor 3 screened table top display which could be used during events e.g. allotment events, pets corner fundraisers. All agreed to buy one.
Card reader has been bought.
Printing & laminating – agreed for individuals to be reimbursed if they do any printing or laminating.
Going to ask film fund for money for bench installation.
JS asked Nature Sign Design about the cover of the noticeboard and they were useless so needs to source somebody else.
Mini library – Cath Ferney did the one on Rye Bank Road. Happy to do one for the park at £200. Sharon keen to have one at the Firswood end of the park. Agreed to proceed.
Action: JS to organise.
11. Allotment (MW)
Minutes: Open day 28th April Sunday afternoon. Stretford Ute playing, plant sale, cakes Hoping to have a speaker from RHS.
5 tonne of manure was delivered last week. Hoping to suggest a gate through to the allotment as part of the lottery funding.
New path to the back of the allotment – leads to Bees area.
Wildflower area being develeoped.
New members turnning up. Things looking good!
12. Gardening Club (SS)
Minutes: Only just started. Every Thursday morning 10-12am. Need to pass on the message that the gardening group can use the allotment tools throughout the allotment group. Can store tools in the Lady Bowlers Hut if needed
Action: MN to source a free metal cupboard.
13. Wildlife Garden & SMCV (RW via text)
Minutes: No updates
14. CORRESPONDENCE
Minutes: Complaints from local resident that cars are parking the grass behind Longford Cottages.
Volunteer fair coming up Sunday July 7th (Trafford Live) looking for volunteers to man a LP stall.
Pets Corner: Work under the NHLF road will go through Pet’s Corner so it will be rebuilt and redesigned. Concern over where the animals will be while the work is going on – also noise and disruption may be too much to keep animals within the park during the work. Suggestion of talking to Wythenshawe Park.
CCTV (Pets Corner) need to ensure that this is included in the NHLF.
Film has been produced by one of the members – to be shown at Chorlton Arts Festival – but could also be shown at any other events. E.g. Streford Day.
Next Pets Corner event Good Friday 12-4pm
Allotment has been filmed for a film connected with Manchester Museum.
Action: Liz to email SH about potential contacts for Wythenshawe Park.
Paula (Pets Corner) to write to Paul Farrand (Copy in RB) to flag up the issues once the landscape architects are appointed.
Liz to email poster to JS to put on website & Facebook as well as photos of volunteers.
15. AOB
Minutes: Walk Sunday 26th May 10.30am Edge Lane entrance – 20 years of the 1 mile walks in the park. Ending at the Lady Bowlers hut for refreshments. Request that somebody is in Pets Corner to chat to walkers. Would be good to have any other FOLP members to volunteer.
