Despite the weather and poor growing conditions, Friends of Longford Park volunteers in Rylands Kitchen Garden have been busy over the last year extending their vegetable beds and establishing a fruit garden.
Thanks to grant funding, fruit trees bushes and soft fruit have been planted and new arches and greenhouses installed ready for next year. One of the organising group said “Although some of our produce this year has been damaged by weather and pests, it has been great to see the garden begin to take shape and we are looking forward to be able to prepare next years plants in our new greenhouses on site.”
As a celebration of what has been achieved so far, we are opening the garden to visitors as part of the national Big Dig initiative, which encourages people to get involved in local growing.
On Sunday 16th September from 2 – 4pm there will be an opportunity to see the gardens, plant some seeds in the new greenhouse, find out about plans, contribute ideas, get involved – and have tea and cakes! Get in touch with us via the website www.rylandskg.org.uk or on 865 6064 for more information.
