Event Update: A large crowd enjoyed the great weather and great music from Stretford Brass Band on the 11th July. We are very pleased that they have agreed to play Longford Park again on the 12th September. For more information about Stretford Brass Band please visit their website.

The training course is for anyone wishing to lead a health walk in the Trafford area. Once trained the individual can choose to either set up a walk their selves or become part of the STRIDE scheme. Benefits of becoming part of STRIDE are:-

1. STRIDE is affiliated to the Walking for Health initiative, a nationally recognised organisation
2. Receive insurance cover for your walk, provided certain criteria is adhered to
3. Free publicity for your walk
4. Walk Leader STRIDE t-shirt and jacket will be provided for all walks
5. Receive the STRIDE newsletter
6. Opportunity to become a member of the Volunteer Walk Leader Group
7. Receive further support and training from the Physical Activity Coordinator
8. Opportunity to become involved in developing walking opportunities Trafford

Please feel free to put as many people as you wish on the training course to make your walks sustainable. If this date is not suitable then please get in touch for later dates. Please forward the email to anyone you feel may be interested.

To celebrate the National Day of Walking on 26th September STRIDE are holding a walking event at Longford Park in Stretford. Jean and Janet (Walk Leaders at Longford Park walk) will be leading the walk on the day. Details of the event are:-

Meeting at Main entrance gate on Edge Lane, junction with Cromwell Road
10.15am
Water and a goodie bag will be provided for all walkers
Children under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult and dogs must be kept on a lead

Friends of Platt Fields and Blue Badge Guides invite you to Guided Walk Training Day Monday 19th July

10 – 12.30pm: Informal and fun session with experienced guide Kate Dibble, learning how to lead an interesting themed walk.

1-2pm: Practice delivering a guided tour of the park with our weekly health walkers.

2-3pm: Feedback and discussion

Please bring a packed lunch; drinks will be provided.

Wheels for All – Aiming High! at Longford Athletics Track – home of the Trafford Wheelers – cycling 10-12 every Friday morning!

Aiming High is funding Wheels for All cycling activities in Trafford.
Starting in July, activities will be taking place over the summer and on into Autumn and Winter.

Work has begun on an exciting project to bring Longford Park back to life.

Students from Stretford Grammar School, with help from experts at Trafford Council, have started work on designs to transform the park’s rose garden.

This is part of a scheme which won the public vote and £50,000 in the Big Lottery Fund’s People’s Millions competition last year, promising to:

• Transform the deteriorating rose garden into a beautiful garden.
• Use the latest sustainable technology to restore running water to the ornamental rock gardens.
• Provide the opportunity for young people from local schools to be involved in all aspects of transforming the gardens.
• Develop an education pack for local schools.

To kick start the project, all Year 7 arts classes at the school visited the garden site and are now putting pens and brush to paper and using their imaginations to put down their vision of an exciting, attractive garden to visit.

A team of young designers from the school, working with Trafford Council’s landscape architects, will distil these ideas into a final design which should be ready by the end of July.

Executive Councillor John Reilly said: “We’re working closely with the Friends of Longford Park and Stretford Grammar School to bring this project to life over the next few months.

Longford Park is steeped in history. We want to maintain it as an historic site while making sure it is more sustainable to ensure it survives in to the future and continues to be well-loved and well-used.

This project is an important stepping stone to future improvements in Longford Park, as laid out in the Park’s Masterplan, and I’m really excited about seeing it come to fruition.

This is an excellent example of how the community coming together can really help make Trafford a greener Borough.”
